- Women Lead the Way
- fullDescription
- Offers practical steps for women to bring their passion, brains, and background to the power tables and make life better for themselves, their company or organization and global society.
- Combines compelling research, international experience, and fascinating personal stories with solid advice
- Tarr-Whelan has extensive background as a business woman, a government official, a non-profit leader, and a nurse A few "first women" are making key decisions in high places but a few is not enough to have a significant impact. Changing what gets decided takes changing who makes the decisions. But with just 17% of Congressional seats and 14% of Fortune 500 board seats held by women, the leaders defining priorities and solutions continue to look and act much the same as generations ago. Linda Tarr-Whelan marshals eye-opening facts and figures to decisively dispel the myths that still hold women back and shows women how to build their confidence and skills to pioneer a distinctive approach to leadership, one that emphasizes collaboration, communication and consensus. The proven tipping point, surprisingly, is just 30%—when women's representation at the top reaches 30%, real change starts to happen. Drawing on her extraordinarily diverse background as a consultant, organizer, and diplomat, Tarr-Whelan offers a women-led strategy for change and a complete set of practical road-tested tools readers can use to become powerful partners in creating a better future in a rapidly changing world. Closing the leadership gap is a win for everyone—it brings in new ideas, creates a more balanced and productive work environment, a revitalized social compact and demonstrable positive effects on the bottom line in business and government. Women Lead the Way artfully combines advocacy, research, and tactical guidance to help readers wedge the door open and bring more women through and up.

Tarr-Whelan argues that women can provide real leadership and change in business, social, and political organizations. To do so, however, she states that women must constitute at least 30 percent of any organization's decision-making hierarchy (she refers to this as the "30% Solution"). Tarr-Whelan, whose varied rsum includes stints in nursing and leadership consulting and as ambassador to the UN Commission on the Status of Women, describes how women in leadership positions can assert themselves, influence decision making, and help advance the careers of other women. This emphasis on truly changing organizational and societal norms (from donating money to charitable causes that share your goals to actively mentoring and hiring other women) is, in the end, what truly sets this title apart from other recent "women in business" titles. Each chapter also includes "takeaway" and "this week I will]" sidebars summarizing its content and providing action suggestions. VERDICT Although some readers may be unnerved by the somewhat militant tone of Tarr-Whelan's demands that women take on leadership roles and help other women into them, most will welcome her concrete suggestions for improving organizational decision making.Sarah Statz Cords, "The Reader's Advisor Online"Copyright 2009 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.

When women comprise 30 percent of the leadership of an organization, it leads to greater collaboration and more effective communication and consensusboosting the bottom line and changing the world, according to Tarr-Whelan. But with only 17 percent of congressional seats and 14 percent of Fortune 500 board seats held by women, the U.S. is far from that 30 percent solution that is needed to overcome cultural inertia and lead to more open and innovative thinking among leaders of government and commerce. Thirty percent is the tipping point beyond token representation for women and enough presence to make a difference in how decisions are made. Tarr-Whelan draws on research in the U.S. and abroad showing how greater involvement by women in leadership positions leads to new perspectives and more effective solutions. She also draws on interviews with successful women and her own 40 years of experience in careers as a nurse, union organizer, policy expert, and ambassador. Each chapter includes research, womens personal stories, and an assessment quiz to help readers plot their paths to leadership. Among the items on the weekly to-do lists: find community networks, join advocacy networks, and urge elected officials to appoint more women to boards and commissions. Tarr-Whelan encourages flexibility, willingness to mentor other women, and assertive drive to push for more women in leadership positions.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
