Description
As long as Newark Eagle-Examiner reporter Carter Ross turns in his stories on deadline, no one bats an eye if he doesn't wander into the newsroom until 10 or 11 in the morning. So it's an unpleasant surprise when he's awakened at 8:38 by a phone call from his boss, telling him a local policeman was killed and Carter will be covering the story, starting immediately. He's baffled when, hours later, there are still no other reporters at the widow's house. And then he gets another call from his boss: the story's off, the cop committed suicide. But when Carter's calls to the police and the morgue are repeatedly blocked, it's clear someone knows more than he's saying about the cop's death.

      • content: Happiness is a mystery writer with a wild sense of humor and a narrator who knows how to deliver it. This charming mystery delivers a surprise--and a good one at that. Narrator Adam Verner raises the bar even higher. His first-person chatty protagonist is glib and brisk. Newark reporter Carter Ross investigates the supposed suicide of a decorated cop and learns that much more is going on. In fact, the suicide might really have been murder, and the irrepressible Ross is determined to find out. Verner is at his finest when portraying the reporter, especially when he brings out Brad Parks's humor. Verner is also adept at switching from reporters' chatter to the voice of a deep-voiced, six-foot-eight African-American cop. The fourth in the Carter Ross series is a sleeper that listeners should not pass up. A.L.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award (c) AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine

        January 7, 2013
Near the start of Parkss satisfying fourth Carter Ross mystery (after 2012s The Girl Next Door), the Newark (N.J.) Eagle-Examiner reporter interviews Noemi Kipps, the widow of 37-year-old Newark policeman Darius Kipps, whom Noemi portrays as a dedicated cop and family man. Only later does Carter learn the cause of deathDarius committed suicide at the Fourth Precinct station. Noemi and celebrity minister Alvin LeRioux call for an independent investigation, but suddenly back off. As Carter tries to figure out if Darius was a good cop or a dirty one, a second cops death raises more questions. Carter milks varied sources, including a couple of brothers who operate an unusual warehouse; he fobs off a gullible intern and editors spy with an amusing prank; and he dodges inept gangbangers. Parks nails the newspaper milieu and the Newark setting, while his solid cast of characters should keep readers eagerly awaiting the next installment. Author tour. Agent: Dan Conaway, Writers House.
