The Picture of Nobody

This high-interest, low-vocabulary novella is intended for adult basic education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) readers. Tommy lives with his family in Ajax, a small town close to Toronto. His parents are Ismaili Muslims who immigrated to Canada before Tommy was born. Tommy, a shy, chubby seventeen-year-old, feels like an outsider. The arrest of a terrorist group in Toronto turns Tommy's world upside down. No one noticed him before. Now, he experiences the sting of racism at the local coffee shop where he works part-time. A group of young men who hang out at the coffee shop begin to bully him. In spite, Tommy commits an act of revenge against the group's ringleader. The repercussions of that act go further than Tommy ever imagined. HL690L

Rabindranath Maharaj, award-winning author of The Amazing Absorbing Boy, was born and raised in Trinidad. Through his writing, Maharaj helps readers understand the immigrant experience. In the early 1990s he immigrated to Canada and completed a second M.A. at the University of New Brunswick in 1993. He taught high school in Ontario for a number of years before co-founding the literary magazine LICHEN in 1999. In addition to novels and collections of short stories, Maharaj has written screenplays as well as reviews and articles for major American and Canadian newspapers and has published in various literary journals and anthologies. Homer in Flight was a finalist for the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award and A Perfect Pledge was a Globe and Mail Best Book. Other titles include The Interloper, The Writer and His Wife, The Lagahoo's Apprentice, The Book of Ifs and Buts, and The Amazing Absorbing Boy, winner of the 2010 Trillium Book Award and the 2011 Toronto Book Award. Maharaj currently lives in Ajax, Ontario.
