- bioText:
Lucy Cousins is one of today's most acclaimed author-illustrators of children's books. Her unique titles fascinate babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with their child-like simplicity, bold outlines, and bright colors. The engaging adventures of characters such as Maisy reflect the familiar experiences that young children have every day. "Maisy does things that children all over the world do," Lucy Cousins says of her superstar mouse. "The way she dresses, the way she acts, are typical of children all over the world."
With Maisy appearing in more than one hundred books as well as her own TV show in the U.S., Lucy Cousins continues to create new characters. Where does the prolific author-illustrator—mother of four children—find the energy? "I'm quite disciplined," she says of her productivity. "If Im having an 'ideas' day, I just sit at my desk and draw and write until I feel something happening—though I admit that this is usually helped by a cup of tea, some lively music, and an abundance of sunshine." As for outside inspiration, she says she's sometimes influenced by the work of other artists, especially if those artists are children. Says the author-illustrator, "I get more pleasure and inspiration from walking around a primary school than from any art gallery."

PreS-Gr 2-A sweet and charmingly simple series entry with a message about friendship and enjoying the game more than the competition. Maisy greets a new day with excitement because she and her friends are going to play soccer. Maisy, Cyril, and Eddie are on the red team, and Dotty, Tallulah and Charley are on the blue. They play a friendly game, encouraging and complimenting one another's moves no matter which team they are on. The game ends in a tie-a little pat, but considering the audience, it keeps the message clear. The best thing about these books is the distinctive, colorful illustrations. Drenched in primary and secondary colors, the animal characters all display personality and humor. These books continue to be popular with young children, and this one will not disappoint.-Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

In these very basic books, Maisy and her cadre of animal pals (all rendered in Cousins's distinctive style) see Hero in the Jungle at a movie theater and play a friendly game that ends in a tie and a message: "It doesn't matter who wins." A number of spreads are too cluttered, but Maisy's fans will nevertheless enjoy her latest, always lively outings.(Copyright 2014 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. All rights reserved.)
