Description

A thrilling genre-bending saga about six extraordinary people whose fates become intertwined on an Earth far different from their own.Without warning, the world comes to an end for Hannah and Amanda Given. The sky looms frigid white. The electricity falters. Airplanes everywhere crash to the ground. But the Givens are saved by mysterious strangers, three fearsome and beautiful beings who force a plain silver bracelet onto each sister' s wrist. Within moments, the sky comes down in a crushing sheet of light and everything around them is gone. Shielded from the devastation by their silver adornments, the Givens suddenly find themselves elsewhere, a strange new Earth where restaurants move through the air like flying saucers and the fabric of time is manipulated by common household appliances. Soon Hannah and Amanda are joined by four other survivors from their world— a mordant cartoonist, a shy teenage girl, a brilliant young Australian, and a troubled ex-prodigy. Hunted by enemies they never knew they had and afflicted with temporal abilities they never wanted, the sisters and their companions begin a cross-country journey to find the one man who can save them— before time runs out. Brilliantly imagined and electrifying from the first page, The Flight of the Silvers is the thrilling first book in a genre-bending new series.

      • content: It's never easy being strangers in a strange land. That's the pointed message that Rich Orlow imparts in his skilled narration of this riveting novel. The Silvers are a group of six (two sisters, a shy teen girl, a brilliant Aussie teen, a sarcastic cartoonist, and a troubled ex-prodigy), selected by three near-deities, who wake up to find themselves in a new world and discover they possess weird abilities related to time. Orlow effectively captures the wide range of emotions of this confused, battered sextet as well as their relentless pursuers. His propulsive pacing carries listeners right to the end of this first book in the new series. The production is a winning combination of story and narrator. D.E.M. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine

        December 2, 2013
Marked from youth, six people are saved from the destruction of their world by the smugly superior Pelletiers, casually lethal superhumans from a distant future. Transported to a universe where history played out differently, the six “Silvers” are dumped into an isolationist but technologically advanced America. Each of them has some special power, such as super-speed or precognition; this makes them useful in the grand machinations of the Pelletiers, but marks them as targets for the government and an existential threat to the secretive Gothams. Then a seventh Silver appears: Evan Rander, a murderous stalker whose unique talent is his ability to rewind time. The first installment in the ambitiously titled Silvers Saga serves to introduce the cast and their situation, one part Crisis on Infinite Earths to one part Runaways, but little more. Price (Slick) has some talent with prose, but the “ends justify the means” moral structure, the largely unlovable characters, and the derivative plot are disappointing. Agent: Stu Miller, Stuart M. Miller Co.

Starred review from June 15, 2014
In the first of a new series, sisters Hannah and Amanda Given are opposites in every way, but when the world suddenly comes to an end, they are both recipients of silver bracelets from mysterious but vaguely familiar strangers. As they and the handful of other survivors start their lives over in a strange new world, they have to fight off enemies they don't know, learn to control their temporal abilities, and figure out how to find the one person who might save them. Rich Orlow demonstrates his incredible versatility, with spot-on characterizations ranging from an Australian teen to a New York cartoonist. This thrill ride will leave the listener desperate for the next installment. VERDICT Recommended for fans of Nick Harkaway and those who enjoy genre-crossing stories. ["Price's strong, engaging characters and fast-moving plot will keep readers on their toes. Highly recommended for fans of apocalyptic and dystopian fiction," read the starred review of the Blue Rider hc, "LJ" 2/15/14.] --Donna Bachowski, Orange Cty. Lib. Syst., FL
