Description
New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose delivers her latest pulse-pounding suspense novel, where the line between the virtual world and everyday reality blurs when it comes to murder.
Eve Wilson's face was once scarred by a vicious assault. Terrified and ashamed, she escaped to the online realm, where she could choose the face she allowed people to see. Years later, her outer scars faded and inner scars buried, Eve has fought her way back to the real world and is determined to help others do the same. Now a graduate student moonlighting as a bartender, Eve researches the addictive powers of online communities. When her test subjects begin turning up dead as a result of apparent suicides, she doesn't know where to turn.
Homicide detective Noah Webster is one of the few people who believe the victims are connected murders. Eve becomes Noah's online guide and realizes that the handsome detective may have secret scars as painful as her own. As Eve and Noah chase a killer who is always one step ahead of them, together they try to overcome the tragedies of their pasts and learn to trust again, but they soon discover that danger is much closer than they think.

      • content: Shadowlands, a virtual-reality world, is the hunting grounds of the "red dress killer." It is also part of a therapy project to help vulnerable women overcome their problems. The project's researcher, Eve, has her own scars from past violence, but she must yet again put herself in peril as she realizes her test subjects are dying, and their deaths are being staged as suicides. Working with homicide detective Noah Webster to track down the predator, Eve must also face her fear of growing close to another. As with all Karen Rose's books, there's a mix of cruel torment, a high body count, and a big romance. Elizabeth S. Rodgers demonstrates her versatility being believably rugged, sexy, warm, or creepy as required. C.A.T. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Virtual reality meets bloody reality in bestseller Rose's spine-tingling 10th thriller, which introduces the Minneapolis PD's “Hat Squad,” whose members earn snappy fedoras for successfully fighting crime. Almost six years have passed since Eve Wilson, a former runaway introduced in Rose's debut, Don't Tell
(2003), moved from Chicago to the Twin Cities after a vicious assault. Plastic surgery has improved her looks, and she's begun researching a Web role-playing game, “Shadowland,” and how it can be used to build self-esteem. Eve also connects with a homicide detective investigating the Red Dress Killer, who finds some victims through Shadowland. Samantha Altman is the killer's first victim, but she's not identified until the second, Martha Brisbane, is found. When Eve learns Martha was a fellow research participant, she becomes a Hat Squad confidential informant. Rose keeps the action popping as the psycho claims more lives, hoping to add Eve to his list.

RITA Award winner Rose is back with another blockbuster romantic suspense novel in which she considers what happens when the real world and the virtual world violently collide. Plucky Eve Wilson, one of Rose's favorite victims (see "Don't Tell" and "Nothing To Fear") has already been kidnapped twice, stabbed, and almost killed multiple times. It might be hard for some authors to devise new calamities, but Rose does a wonderful job of making Eve's current predicament an example of her growth and recovery since we last saw her. VERDICT It is not necessary to read the previous novels to enjoy this one, and fans of Rose's serial killer stories will be thrilled that Rose gives them all the tension; grisly, tortured minds; complex, interlocking plotlines; and nonstop action that are hallmarks of all her books. Highly recommended for all adult readers not offended by violence or some explicit sexual content. [See Prepub Alert, "LJ" 4/15/09.]Crystal Renfro, Georgia Inst. of Technology, Atlanta

Nearly six years after being savagely attacked and left for dead (Dont Tell, 2006), Eve Wilson is a graduate student conducting a double-blind research study on raising self-esteem through role-playing in the virtual world, as participants socialize in the online adult playground Shadowland (with its motto sometimes you want to go where no one knows your name). But when women in the study disappear, Eve risks her academic future to notify homicide detective Noah Webster, an occasional customer at the Minneapolis cop hangout where she tends bar. When murders disguised as suicides point to a serial killer, Eve assists Noahdenying the mutual attraction between them because she considers herself too damaged for a relationshipand becomes the killers prime target. Meanwhile, Noah and his partner, Jack Phelps, featured recently in a local magazine, are the prey of men seeking vengeance. As the liaison between Eve and Noah inevitably heats up, the body count rises, and the killers identity becomes clear, leading to a hair-raising climax. For romantic-suspense fans who dont mind some edge, or thriller fans who can tolerate a little sweet stuff.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
