St. Albans Fire
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
In northwestern Vermont, young Bobby Cutts enters the family barn and encounters a nightmare. Surrounded by bolts of fire, Bobby and the entire herd perish in a stampeding, circle of flames. Called to the scene to investigate, Joe Gunther instantly recognizes arson. But by whom? And why? Gunther quickly discovers that someone is wreaking havoc across the bucolic farmlands surrounding the town of St. Albans. Somewhere in the dense social fabric of the community, in the hearts and souls of Bobby's family, and in the cutthroat farming business underneath the region's placid exterior are the truths his team must ferret out. But what looked like a local case is about to take them from the barns of Vermont to the gritty streets of Newark, New Jersey. Before all is said and done, Joe Gunther will meet one of his deadliest opponents to date ... and he will need far more than his skills as a policeman to protect the people closest to his heart.

- content: Christopher Graybill's expertise in the narration of a variety of genres makes him the perfect choice for the fifteenth installment of the Joe Gunther mystery series. The Gunther series is set in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where the heartiest of Yankees live. The crusty characters in the story, along with Gunther's serious demeanor, provide an opportunity for listeners to interpret the story for themselves. Although the complexity of the plot makes interpretation difficult sometimes, the narration of the relationships among the characters assists listeners in comprehending the significant threads of the story. September 12, 2005
Deaths and barn burnings north of Burlington, Vt., that result in farm sales to two local real estate agents lead Joe Gunther into a convoluted case in Mayor's entertaining 16th novel to feature the Vermont Bureau of Investigation cop (after 2004's The Surrogate Thief
). Are the crimes personal or financial, coincidental or planned? Gunther and his obstreperous sidekick, Willy Kunkle, travel to Newark, N.J., in search of answers and an arsonist. When the Jersey police are first helpful then dismissive, the pair decide to investigate on their own, turning up some surprising evidence in Newark's underworld. Mayor delves deeper than ever before into his characters' psychology, especially the women: tough Newark cop Lil Farber; Peggy DeAngelis, the arsonist's naïve girlfriend; and two dispirited farm wives, beautiful Linda Cutts and her vicious mother, Marie. He also subtly portrays the shifting relationship between Gunther and his lover, Gail Zigman. Though the discoveries in Newark fall into place almost too easily, Mayor serves up another highly satisfying mystery. Agent, Molly Friedrich at the Aaron Priest Agency.
